He just needs to see something with 4 wheels ahead of him and he will try to overtake it Laughing . Surprisingly, he does well when he qualifies towards the back but isn't that impressive when he qualifies in the top 10.

Other than his DSQ in the first race (illegal Sauber), Kamui has finished in the points at every single race this season.

Australia - DSQ (after finishing in points)
Malaysia - 7th
China - 10th
Turkey - 10th (after car failure in quali, started last)
Spain - 10th
Monaco - 5th
Canada - 7th

Car pecking order should be:
1. Red Bull
2. McLaren
3. Ferrari
4. Mercedes
5. Renault
6. Sauber

So it is a remarkable effort, and huge consistency.

Perez by contrast was a very successful GP2 driver when compared to Kobayashi, but in the hands of an F1 car Kobayashi seems to have the goods.

Drivers Standings
8. Heidfeld 29pts
9. Schumacher 26pts
10. Rosberg 26pts
11. Kobayashi 25pts
......
16. Perez 2pts

If not for Melbourne DSQ Kamui would be 8th in the WDC with the 6th best car.

IMO he has had a stellar year, and I am not too concerned with his qualifying efforts. The field seems impressed by Perez, so that bodes well for Kamui.

Quali Head-to-Head
Kobayashi 2
Perez 2
(both drivers have one uncontested quali each - I haven't counted)

Race Head-to-Head
Kobayashi 3
Perez 2
(Perez hasn't contested last two races - I haven't counted)

It seems that when Perez is in front, it is a narrow margin, as in Australia and Spain (1 position only). When Kobayashi is in front Perez has been in wilderness fighting with the backmarkers.

So for me, Kobayashi has been beyond criticism thus far this season. IMO. mrgreen

Kamui told F1 today in an interview when asked about closed cockpits:

KK - Well, of course safety is very important and safety recommendations are always welcomed, but I don’t think that closed cockpits would help. Or let’s put it this way, it would help with flying objects like tyres or other pieces of a car hitting a driver’s head - this is where a closed cockpit could be a big help - but there is another side: how can people get out of the car fast? Formula One cars are built around a monocoque that is pretty much fitted to our body and that you cannot open from the side. So on the one hand a closed cockpit would surely help prevent impacts from flying objects to the head, but what if a car catches fire? We have the fuel tank just behind us. And then to get out of a closed cockpit? Nearly impossible. Probably such a fundamental re-shape of the car’s silhouette would also change Formula One itself.

I think that this will be a generally shared opinion on the whole 'closed cockpit' argument.

When was the last time we had a situation where a driver HAD to get out of the car quickly?

VS

When was the last time a driver was injured by a foreign object, or nearly hit?

With marshalls always nearby now, getting out matters less than before..... and with clever design getting out of a canopy car might be a non issue anyway.

Last year a GP2 driver died after a stray wheel bounced onto the track and collected hos head. Also last year, Massa was hit in the face with a spring that came loose off of another car further ahead of him. It happens.

Q: What’s your favourite smell?
KK: The smell of women”

Q: What’s the first thing you do when you get home after a race?
KK: I wash my clothes. I don’t have a huge selection of clothes so whenever I get home I immediately wash my clothes. Sometimes I then have nothing for the day after. (laughs)

Q: What would you spend your last dollar on?
KK: I would use it as a down payment on a flight back to Japan.

LOL

He makes contact as much as Sato.

He actually has really good race craft, it's surprising. He leaves space for other drivers, he hits his braking points. His closing speeds into the hairpin were amazing compared to the rest. Surely Sauber could get more sponsership on their car, he gets good air time.

Yeah. Kobayashi is so underrated. He has so much potential. I agree he makes a LOT of contact, but I think it's really interesting how he drives skillfully, but NEVER gets recognized for it. (He eats up front wings like a fat guy eating potato chips, though) Sato was insane, I think. He's racing in indycar now, doing well. I nearly broke the tv when Sato lost the Indy 500 thanks to that retard Franchitti.
