Re: 7.4 magnitude quake in New Zealand

How tradgic that earthquake was. On the grand scheme of things, we human beings are really nothing, we are just so weak and fragile when confronted by the nature, our individual existence doesn't have much weight in the long history of the universe. We all just come and go and the universe moves on as if nothing happened. However, we are still all priceless souls, loved by others, and the losses of lives of people around us give us such a huge sense of deprivation in our hearts, a void that sometimes nothing can really fill up. My hearts and prayers are with the ones who lost their loved ones, and I really do feel for them. I just hope life treats them kind, kind enough so that they can at least maintain normal lives.

So many volcanic activities are reported around the world, and it looks as if the earth is furious for some reasons. I just hope not too many people's lives are affected by these catastrophes in any bad ways.

The worst I remember in recent years was one that hit Newcastle and that was in 1989. I think Australia is quite a safe place when it comes to earthquakes, but you never know.

Earthquakes big enough to feel are extremely unusual here. Even the Newcastle quake only lasted 5 seconds, completely out of nowhere, and only 6 on the scale.

All modern NZ buildings and houses (for quite a few years now) have been built to strong earthquake standards. Thats why the first quake only took out old buildings mainly. (this latest quake was far stronger)

In Australia, not being on a fault line you may not have as rigid building standards (earthquake-wise). But instead your houses are probably built to withstand heat, cyclones, pythons etc Very Happy

I have always wondered why the houses in Oz are not designed to withstand forest fires?

The earthquake was only a five I think, but incredibly shallow (1km). And all those old buildings.......does Spain have earthquake building codes?
