Mclaren block Merc engines for RedBull again
Newey says Renault only engine option for Red Bull
Newey seems pissed off. Thou that photo may be out of centext, I too would be pissed off if my rivals had the ability to dictate which engine I can put in my car. Even if the Mclaren + Mercedes relationship was like it was I still think this is extremely audacious of Mclaren to do. As it is at the moment they are merely Mercedes customers so it makes it even more unbelieveble that they have the power to still do that. But the main point is not "can they" but "why did they".
The answer is they are genuinely afraid of Newey's car!

You basically answered part of your own question - they are afraid.
As why can they veto? I don't know the details of the Mercedes - McLaren contract, but there must be something in that that legally makes McLaren able to pull this off.

Aren't McLaren not using MErc engines in 2011?

Why? Because they think it will give them an advantage. If they have a veto, then they'd be mad not to use it.

Re: Mclaren block Merc engines for RedBull again
If I was Macca and I had that power why on earth would I let the fastest team get the fastest engine?? Its not as if Red Bull would not do the same in return to Macca given half the chance. (F1 is the Piranha Club, not tea with the Vicar)
The real problem is the engine freeze and the non-adherence to it.

Newy summed up the Ferrari deal in his interview.
Renault just have to do some work on the engine and say what Merc and Ferrari siad " We haven't touched them" and the FIA will say " ok but we wouldn't mind a little donation into this Swiss bank account"

Wouldnt a Ferrari engine (even one not as good as the home teams) be better than the Renault?

No. and Ferrari service is about 0. They just dump the engines at your door and flee. Ask Force India!
At least Renault is cooperating with RedBull - as I guess Mercedes also would...

Besides Renault is more fuel efficient. Ferrari are less reliable and more fuel hungry. Besides, they use you as guinea pigs for testing their "reliability" improvements
. Just ask Sauber.

Newey kind of resembles an angry Bruce Willis.

That will change once McLaren becomes a non-financial partner of Mercedes.

Re: Mclaren block Merc engines for RedBull again
Mercedes have their own team now, sooner or later they will sell their interest in McLaren. Then it is my understanding that Mercedes would love a one engined F1 world where everyone drives a Mercedes. Maybe that will never happen but they'll start by picking up Red Bull.
By then Mark will retired so I don't care anyway.

Re: Mclaren block Merc engines for RedBull again
I think McLaren already bought back the 40% share in their team from Mercedes... there's something else, some sort of agreement or whatnot.
edit:
Dennis co-owns the Group along with Techniques d'Avant Garde and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, a company owned by Bahrain, which has been a minority shareholder since 2007 In 2000 Mercedes's parent company Daimler (then DaimlerChrysler) bought a 40% share of McLaren which they maintained until 2009 when they bought-out the championship winning Brawn team and began to sell back their McLaren stake. By March 2010 Daimler retained 11% of McLaren although they will continue as a sponsor and engine supplier to the team until 2015

Then whenever the veto runs out. Might be in 2015 when the contracts are resigned.

thats true, but then would mercedes even want to sell to them? Red bull will be a direct rival not only to mclaren but to merc as well once they become good again

Because of marketing. Either of the 3 teams win, they win with Mercedes engines

Same reason Renault wants Red Bull to keep their engines. Whatever they lack in horsepower they seem to make up for in technical support and service.
