Haha.

Am still playing the same game (it's on epic setting and King). Have now been at war with Washington for what must be 12 hours gameplay. He constantly refused to discuss peace despite me gradually taking one city after another. It's been really entertaining: just as I would get the upper hand, he would throw new tech like air power at me for which I had no defence. Gradually I would match him and it's gone on from there. He started out 500 points ahead of me and was by far the biggest civ and now he is 500 behind me and, at last, asking for peace. Only thing is, he isn't offering any incentive so I might have to keep killing him. Meanwhile Catherine is building a spaceship while we have been building military stuff. It's gonna be a close call I think!

Despite my initial reservations, this is a great game!

AI lag is not so bad but then I am running quad core with bags of RAM. Was gonna have a bash on my laptop but I reckon that would struggle.

I remember on some older Civs there used to be a full-replay option. This doesn't appear to have it which is a real shame. Used to be fun to watch your progress.

Other Civs dont like me (due to my invasions) so I cant trade with them now (unless its on VERY unfair terms). How do I fix that?

They get moody whatever you do. I have nearly finished a game (not been playing much recently). It's about 2030 and I am building a space ship. I have gone through the entire game without one single battle (except barbarians) and the majority of the computer players hate me for no apparent reason. They periodically break agreements telling me they hate me for collecting wonders. They will trade luxuries but only offering stupid trades.

In another game I was best mates with the Americans for centuries then they declared war on me just because I lived next door. Seems to me that you can play as 'nicely' as possible and they still end up hating you!

They must want tribute, but you cant appease the whole world. Oh well, I shall just make myself the biggest, baddest guy around.

But attacking a friend just because they are next door........that is exactly what a human player does when they decide its time to grow!!

Well that's true but it's usually preceded by some diplomatic tension!

OK I got a big problemo.......playing against a human I ended up on the same continent with he attacked me by surprise with Samurai's and captured two cities early in the game. These punks were unstoppable as they always fight at full strength (and were much stronger than any of my units).

Whats the best anti-samurai strategy? Right now I am building musketeers by the boat load so at least I have units that can stand up to his ones (whilst being producable enough to outnumber him!!)

Yes the samurai are unrealistically strong. Whilst I was only playing against the computer, the only was I found I could defend was through sheer numbers. If you can manage to obliterate his samurai just once or twice, you at least have enough XP to withstand further waves. But if you're onto musketmen now, it shouldn't be a problem because the samurai will be obsolete soon.

I haven't played for ages but I think I kicked Japanese bloke's butt by combining archers with longswordsmen with a ratio of at least 2-1.

Dave, how does it work when you get a computer player to agree to go to war in 10 turns. Do they come to you on the right turn, or do you need to remember to see them?

They come to you and say you agreed to go to war. Then you are given the option of doing that or going back on your word and pissing them off!

Ive played so many 2 players games (and seldom to a point that far past gunpowder) that I decided to have some good 1 player games.

Ive found its a better game in 1 player. The computer plays better, it is far more atmospheric, Im enjoying it.

Ive also discovered that you can defend against a much superior enemy if you fight from prepared positions using artillery support and reserve units (which can swap with injured units in the forts)................so build forts with roads to them!!!!!!

Come to think of it that is rather obvious advice!!!

There are small details that annoy me with the one player game.

Chief of which is that the after-game debrief doesn't give you enough information. This is most annoying when you lose and have no idea why.

I played yesterday, got to about 1960 on epic mode, spent loads of turns building a huge army, fleet and airforce, was just about to attack my most powerful rival and it told me I had lost! I still don't know why...
