F1’s new team ’cripples’ are ’an embarrassment’ - Ecclestone

"We need to get rid of a few of those cripples"

Monday 1 November 2010 - 08h57, by GMM

F1’s three new teams have been "an embarrassment" for the sport in 2010, according to chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.

Through additional financial incentives, the 80-year-old Briton actively enticed new entrants into pitlane this year.

But he has told the Financial Times that Virgin, Lotus and HRT have ultimately added no value to F1 because of their lack of competitiveness.

"They do nothing for us, they are an embarrassment," said Ecclestone. "We need to get rid of a few of those cripples."

He clarified that the Malaysian team Lotus is worth keeping in F1 beyond 2010, and called for Sir Richard Branson to put some serious money into Virgin.

"Richard should put some money in there shouldn’t he? He could do what (Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz) has done and put some money in."

Gotta love him Laughing

I dont get why its not up to him who enters his sport. He should choose who enters F1, not the FIA Rolling Eyes

Mate, if Bernie chose which teams got in he would make RBR vettels team (more than it currently is anyway)

No team would be doing a better job than Lotus, none....so Bernie.....shut up..please, again.

1. The new teams would have been more competitive, if FIA had applied a non-political, serious selection process.

2. It's a matter of taste. I enjoyed the 24 car grid even though the last six were significantly behind. For me, their fights added to the joy of it.

3. They are an embarassment only if they can get in touch with midfield next season. Give newcomers some time to learn - especially in face of the testing ban.

4. I'd have liked to see 26 cars in 2011 - shame FIA once again made an apparently arbitrary/political decision w/o any transparency.

5. BE is a proven cheater and his opinion counts nothing since he changes it faster than you can twinkle.

The larger grid has improved the spectacle and the backmarkers are no slower than the backmarkers we used to have before Mosley decimated the grid.

As for 'embarrassment' - it's nonsense. Nobody claims that football is embarrassed because some football clubs are lousy. A sport is judged on a great deal more than the weakest of its competitors. The biggest embarrassment F1 has had to face in the last 2 decades is the corruption mismanagement of the FIA.

Well, Bernie is pissed off because he has to "share" money with three additionnal teams, and he does not like it. It's all about money.

And I agree, the new teams are doing ok considering the timing and conditions that FIA set during the election process.
- Cosworth engine compulsory (Epsilon had everything but they wanted the Rinooo engine)
- No time to build the car
- No free testing (that is harder for new teams)
etc, etc...

Last but not least, the 80's are considered the best decade and there were a lot of backmarkers even "worse" than HRT, virgin and Lotus.

Anyway, again it's all about the money, and there will be a big Clash in 2013 when FOM rights must be re-negociated together with the teams.

I think that's a very important point. So again, we can look to Mosley and his cronies.

Time wasent really the FIA`s fault. There was the whole FOTA vs FIA issue which meant a decision couldnt be made on new teams until they knew what they were getting into.

PLUS, Lotus has the least time of the lot yet they are the best....

The FOTA vs FIA issue would never have been an issue without Mosley's arrogance and the testing ban is purely FIA.

Bernie is probably correct (as usual), he just uses such colourful language when perhaps he could have been more diplomatic. Laughing
