Yes.....Nick replaces people all the time, he is seldom a first choice. Yet he has beaten Kimi, Mark, Kuby and probably other good drivers over the course of a season.

Well, he has no other options.

At Sauber in 2010, however, Heidfeld was hardly better than PDLR. I would try to get Hülkenberg if I was Renault team principle.

Most probably Hülkenberg would need to be bought out of his Force India contract + payed a salary, while Nick, or Fisico would do it for free (or peanuts). + Hulk has no experience whatsoever to lead a team and development.

Renault is done for the year, no matter how good a car they have.

Nick is good enough driver to keep Renault floating!

Gary, good that you have a bunny avatar again!

and yeah, he's good enough to keep them floating, but that wasn't the plan for the year, I'm sure.

Since they are sort of Lotus team B, they might have to go with plan B

Plans change. They need to stay as high as they can this season,
so they stay attractive for Robert after his (hopeful) recovery.

And yes, I felt piratical again...

Rinoo: "We don’t know yet if and when Robert will return. If it will be a long recovery and he will not be back this season, we need to rely on an experienced driver.

"The fate of our season will depend on this new driver, as without Robert it is difficult to predict how we will fare. Obviously, we need a driver capable of winning the championship."

I guess if they want that, they are:

1) Very confident about their new car, and
2) Out of luck because the only driver capable of winning the championship (and a big ? mark here because he has been out of the sport) is Kimi and he is rallying...

Near tragic turn for Kubica.

A nearly severed arm, means lot's of microsurgery and rehabilitation.

He will have to work very hard to recover to 100%.

Everything else is minor by comparison.

You can do it, Robert!

Renault...i dont really think there is anyone who can win the WDC available..unless your car is dominant.

They either think they have car for it, or they are full of hot air.

Yeah, I really wish Renault, or anyone else for that matter, had a car to challenge the top 3 in 2011, but don´t we all at the beginning of seasons?

Oh, and just came across this. It was only logical:

Lotus Renault GP has revised its driver line-up for this week’s test session in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

Vitaly will drive the R31 on Thursday and Friday, as originally scheduled. For Saturday and Sunday, the team will give mileage to Bruno Senna and will also evaluate Nick Heidfeld, who is a potential replacement for Robert Kubica as a race driver.

The exact running order for the weekend will be confirmed on Friday evening.

It was, after all, Robert's first full season in F1. Whatever the case, Nick is quite capable of driving for Renault ... albeit, not at the
level of Robert Kubica, in my opinion. I hope he gets the drive, he deserves it . Not many options for Renault in such a short period
of time and Kimi is certainly not going to drop everything to return to F1 in a team that has limited success since their championships
with Alonso.
I think Renault's comments are relative to replacing a driver with the talents of Robert, who many believe has the quality of a World
Champion... in a way they are paying tribute to their driver that had a brush with death and is recovering in a hospital bed. Nothing
more , nothing less.

Nick Heidfeld. Somehow he hangs around, seizing on every opportunity to get a race seat. Incredible, he's gonna pull it off again.

But actually I was more impressed with Christian Klein last year, who stepped in for Hispania in Singapore. Straight on the pace versus Bruno...

Devastating News for Kubica... The New Renault seems to be extremely competitive and now Kubica is gonna miss a golden opportunity to prove his pace and that of Renaults.
Heidfeld is no doubt the best replacement they have, but I personally would like to see Bruno have a another crack at F1 in a much more competitive car then that bucket of shit HRT last year.
Call me sentimental but I so desperately want to see the "Senna" name back in the top half of F1, and I think the new Renault can give him that opportunity.
In saying that... Petrov may very well blow his doors off. Rolling Eyes

I'm wondering what more Nick has to do get people to agree he is talented. I mean, which other driver can claim to have beaten drivers like Kimi, Webber, Kubica ( in 3 out of 4 seasons together ) and still be called useless ?
We also need to remember that Kubica got his only win, only cause Nick was on a different strategy and let him through.

He is talented in my book, but he doesn't have the Aura or Mojo, as the drivers he has beaten. Smile

I think the problem is his pace. Certainly in the Webber year, he had lousy pace but inherited from lots of mistakes and inconsistency from Webber. I don't recall the Kimi or Kubica years, though in both cases the other two were rookies.

And he was soundly outpaced by Kobayashi last season when he filled in.

Maybe his racing is fine but he has poor people skills or something? Must be some reason why he struggles to build hype, which is so important in F1.

Nick is an OK driver, but since he is a quiet type, he didn't make it as far as he could based on his talents in the cutthroat world of F1.

I'd say he is in the group with Massa, Trulli, etc. Top of 2nd tier driver. Plus he's consistent. He can help develop the car, too, but he just won't be good enough to bother the top team/driver combinations. He's still the best option Renault has, by far. All IMO. of course

BBC wrote:Renault's Robert Kubica has been moved from intensive care as he continues his recovery following a high-speed rally crash in Italy on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Pole suffered multiple fractures and will undergo two operations on his foot and upper arm at an Italian hospital on Friday.

A further operation on Kubica's elbow has been scheduled for Monday.

"His general condition is good, so much so we can programme two operations on Friday," Dr Giorgio Barabino said.

"Next week we expect to perform the last operation on the patient." .
