Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, but this is a massive blow for Renault.

Kubica suffers multiple fractures

By Jonathan Noble and David Evans Sunday, February 6th 2011, 14:23 GMT

Robert Kubica looks set to miss the start of the new Formula 1 season after suffering multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand in a crash on the Ronde di Andora rally on Sunday.

The Polish driver was airlifted to hospital on Sunday morning following a high-speed crash that took place 4.6 kilometres into the opening stage of the event, on a stage near the village of Testico in Italy.

Kubica is understood to have swiped a wall and hit a crash barrier in a Super 2000 Skoda Fabia on the first stage of the rally - which he was competing in shortly after completing the first week of pre-season F1 testing with Renault at Valencia.

According to sources at the event, Kubica was trapped in the car for more than one hour until specialist extraction equipment could get to the scene of the crash.

There are unconfirmed reports that Kubica's injuries were caused by the end of a crash barrier penetrating the car - which would explain why his injuries were on his right hand side rather than by the door.

After being transferred to the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, Kubica underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon for the injuries he suffered - with doctors believed to be focusing their efforts on his injured hand.

According to a statement issued by Kubica's Renault team, he has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand. The hospital is expected to issue a statement about Kubica's condition later on Sunday, while his manager Daniel Morelli is scheduled to hold a press conference.

Kubica's injuries look almost certain to prevent him starting the season for Renault, with the first race of the campaign due to take place in Bahrain on March 13.

Renault will likely call on reserve driver Bruno Senna to fill in in the short term, but the team could opt for a more experienced driver if Kubica faces a more lengthy lay-off.

I am sorry to sound pessimistic, but his injuries sound bad, and while we hope he recovers from them totally, I fear his season 2011 at least will be gone. Let us all hope that he can return to F1 in 2012 if that is the case!

Reports from news channels at the hospital

@F1Lite
Kubica is in no immediate danger. Internal bleeding has been virtually stopped. Operation on the hand will continue until 7pm GMT. #F1

Just really hope they can save his hand now

He is in no life threatening condition, so that is the good news. Bad news are news about his hand and legs. Lets hope this top surgeon can save his hand.

They are operating on his hand until 7PM GMT. His hand wont be amputated (which was reported early on ), however it is not clear yet what the lasting damage will be. With injuries to his arm and leg, who knows if he will come back in 2011 to F1, but the most important thing is his life is not in danger.

the car he crashed...big shunt!

Apparently some of the armco made its way into the cockpit Sad

Good to hear that he is not in life-threatening conditions.
Fingers crossed for the operations at hand!

Not that important today, but this puts Renault into severe problems. A driver pairing Senna-Petrov - as expected by autosport - would be more than suboptimal ...

Its a disaster for them. Kubica carried the team. At least Senna will get a decent car/chance if he gets the drive and a reasonable comparison to Petrov.

Well, any decent car is wasted with Senna/Petrov as drivers ...

Renault will need someone to carry team until Robert can hopefully return, be that this year or next. Is Nick available?

Bad news. My best wishes for a quick and complete recovery for Robert.

Its really awful to see that big hole in the car inside front. It seems that a part of the metal barrier invaded the cockpit... Sad

Post by GUP on Sun Feb 06, 2011 7:18 pm

Robert Kubica's manager has revealed that surgeons are still battling to restore functionality to the Renault driver's right hand.

Kubica, who was taking part in the Rally Ronde di Andora in Italy on Sunday morning, lost control of his Skoda Fabia.

The car left the road at high speed and crashed into a wall of a church with the driver's side sustaining the impact.

Kubica had to be cut from the car and was airlifted to Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure where he is undergoing surgery, having suffered multiple fractures.

Although there were fears that the Renault driver would lose his right hand, his manager Daniele Morelli revealed that is not the case.

However, it remains to be seen whether Kubica will recover complete functionality.

"Robert is very strong and he will do it," were Morelli's optimistic words as he addressed reports at the hospital.

I really hope Robert can pull through this. He's pulled through big shunts before, hopefully he can do the same again this time. Really had high hopes for him.

As for Renault, Kubica was the only part I really liked about them. I think they are screwed without him.
