Re: WebHead's Big Holiday
Last minute packing right now.
I have a pocket-type camera, so you won't see any nice high-speed pics of F1 cars, but I'll do my best to show you everything else.

Re: WebHead's Big Holiday
Hi Guys!
It's been a jam packed weekend so far. Because the race is at night, we have all day free to take in the sights. My feet are killing me from all the walking. It is now Saturday morning, and I already feel destroyed. Botanic Gardens is the main attraction visited so far. Today we will check out China town, and maybe a local Mountain at the southern end of the city.
As for the F1, we were fortunate enough to get a free ride on the singapore flyer, and this is what it looked like. Simply breathtaking views, during Free Practice 1.

Re: WebHead's Big Holiday
A few things stand out for me so far.
Firstly, Singapore appears to be a city of contradictions. In some parts of town, it is the modern 'westernish' city you see in those photos. Expensive cars everywhere and malls that will send you broke. Meals are extremely expensive, etc. Even the food at the F1 track looks cheap by comparison.
Then merely two subway stations away, you could go to a poor district with a different demographic and the cheapest market food available. We are staying in Little India, which has a lovely hawker centre with 3 dollar meals, which is excellent.
The Subway system is fantastic and just about everyone speaks English - though obviously some people are still hard to understand. And there has been no sign of thieves or anything like that.
The seats at the F1 are cramped and you have view of only one corner, as usual. But it seems this race is less about the F1, and more about Linkin Park, Shaggy, Shakira and having a good time.
I am so tired and sore...

Re: WebHead's Big Holiday
I forgot to mention that this place is seriously humid! Even at night. It makes walking around extremely unpleasant. We hiked across the entire circuit tonight to catch Shakira. The destination was great but the journey was horrible. We're not sure we can be bothered to do it again tomorrow night.
The track has stages all over the place. Near our grandstand we were fortunate to catch Charice prior to Free Practice 3. I have never heard of her and still don't know. Apparently she is of Glee fame. She sounded great though. Very nice vocals.

After practice we headed for Padang. All the main acts occur over there, and it is the nearest entry from the CBD area. So if you are interested in convenience, want to see the bands, and can afford pricey accommodation you should pick a Grandstand in Zone 4 near Padang stage. We didn't, and our legs are sore.
From the Esplanade in Zone 4 you can get a great view of the famous boat bridge building. It really is a one of a kind.

The atmosphere was quite incredible. The main area was absolutely packed.

Our forefathers fought for our freedom, and also for good views of Shakira.

We enjoyed a picnic style meal whilst treated to the distant sounds of Shakira. She sounds like the real thing too.

It was a long hike back, but we caught all of qualifying. As an Aussie it was nice to see Mark make an honest effort, and decent lap.
Seb looks extremely quick and tidy from where we are sitting. It should be a very interesting race, but an easy predictable victory.

Awesome! I love having our own personal reporter at the GP. We can see pics of the F1 cars anywhere, but a glimpse into the atmosphere is really special. Thanks so much for sharing it with us WebHead.

Do they still execute them in Singapore or is that just for chewing gum?
Joking aside, a great set of pictures and lovely commentary Webhead.
Enjoy race day.

Re: WebHead's Big Holiday
Thanks Ray. It probably won't surprise you that the circuit was patrolled by some scary looking crews. Most of the foot units had Tazers, but we saw one patrol unit equipped with M-type weapons of some sort.
I will post some more pics tomorrow. I am heading to Kuala Lumpur for a few days to wind down. It has been a very tiring GP. Congrats to Vettel.

When I saw Schumi crash the first thing I thought was "I hope Webhead got a good shot of that".
Also Webhead, I know I want to visit Singapore.... but is it worth doing it for the GP?

Re: WebHead's Big Holiday
Have you ever been to a GP before Rus? What about the V8 supercars? Visiting these events is more about the atmosphere. If you have a screen nearby your experience will be at worst equivalent to watching it on TV.
It may interest Aussies to know that Neil Crompton did the local commentary for the entire event. When the cars zoom by you can't hear the commentary unless you have noise reduction headphones and listen to the local track radio broadcast. (You can hire or buy these sets or use your own)
But to give you an idea Rus, we completed the following during our trip. We have some idea of what to see but didn't have any concrete agenda.
Friday:
City Tour
Orchard Road District
Botanical Gardens
Saturday:
Mt Faber
Sentosa Island
Chinatown
Sunday
Zoo
So because it is a night race, there is plenty of time to do other stuff in Singapore. The Grand Prix is really just an excuse to see the rest of the country.
Just wait to see what I get up to in Japan and Korea!
