A cannonball fired during filming of an episode of Mythbusters missed the mark and hit a Californian home and a minivan.

Producers of the popular science-fiction show were filming an episode involving artillery when the accident occurred between 4.15pm and 4.30pm Tuesday, the US ABC network reports.

"This cannonball was supposed to pass through several barrels of water and a cinder block wall to slow its inertia," said J.D. Nelson of Alameda County Sheriff's Department.

"When the shot was fired, it misfired. The cannon lifted."

The cannonball may have hit something during its flight which caused it shoot over the hillside that shields the neighbourhood below, ktvu.com reports.

The projectile, fired from a nearby bomb site, travelled just over three kilometres to hit the Dublin home.

It passed through both sides of the house before glancing off the side of a van that was passing by.

No one was injured in the incident.

The Mythbusters crew debunk scientific myths perpetuated by films and television shows through experiments.

It's not clear what experiment they were trying to debunk on Tuesday.

Nelson, who spoke with the Discovery Channel which airs Mythbusters, said the program's producers sorry about the incident.

He said the program had used the bombing range more than 50 times and there had never been any problems.

"We never even had any kind of an incident let alone anything this terrible," Nelson said.
