Re: The Misc. Sports Thread

Federer beat Tsonga and Nadal beat Fish. Federer seemed to loose concentration again in the second set and let Tsonga get back into rythm. It could've been much more difficult for him but he luckily broke the final service game of Tsonga. That's the problem Federer has shown for the past 4 years. He will have to do better to defend his title.

Nadal escaped from a surprisingly competitive match. No disrespect to Fish, but he played much better than I expected, or maybe we can say Nadal didn't play that well. Federer v Nadal in the second match will be huge.

Australia beat South Africa in the thrilling second test to tie the series 1-1. That was a gutsy performance by the Aussies. I thought we were in trouble after South Africa's second inning which saw their lead going up to 309, but what a good comeback that was.

In tennis, Murray lost to Ferrer and Djokovic struggled but beat determined Berdych. Federer was right. This year's version of the tournament is very tight. I still think it will be Federer-Murray and Djokovic-Nadal in the semis, but not 100% sure.

People keep saying Federer should retire, but if he is still making semis and finals why should he?

I wasn't one of them. Laughing

Federer was so dominant a few years ago and some of his career records will only get worse if he continues on. I think that's what some people are afraid of. I personally want to see him winning a Slam or two and the Olympic gold, and take no. 1 spot for 2 more weeks to set a new record for being at the no. 1 for the longest period(currently he is 1 week behind Sampras). Maybe those are the records Federer himself is chasing. Could keep him motivated, I guess.

Federer beat Nadal 6-3 6-0. Nadal hasn't done that well in the season finale so far in his career and his record is 9-9, which is not good by his standard. Maybe his game doesn't suit indoor condition.

In the meantime, Murray withdraws from the event due to injury. That's a shame because he's had a good run towards the end of this year and could've done well here. Federer can now overtake Murray at no.3 spot by winning the last group match against Fish and also winning the semifinal match.

Maybe Federer should be playing only the tournaments where they play only 3 sets. He seems to be doing well in those games Smile.

Lol. You are right. Federer can maintain his concentration for 2 sets and he can win 2-0 in the best of 3 sets matches. However, Masters finals are 5 set matches, as well as the grand slam matches, which Federer wants most. If he wants to be no.1 again for even just for two weeks, he will have to win those big ones.

Nadal out of ATP World Tour Finals. I did think Nadal was not playing as well as he could. He seemed a bit tired. Tsonga is dangerous when he is confident and he is quite unstoppable once he gets on a roll.

Federer seemed a bit off against Fish. His sudden loss of concentration occurred again, but he escaped somehow. If Ferrer beats Berdych in the last round-robin match, it will be Federer v Djokovic in the semifinal.

That has been the problem with Fedex lately. He still plays very well but his lapses of concentration are hurting him very much. He plays some awesome tennis in one set and then suddenly starts playing like a rookie for no reason. If he has to win a Grand Slam again, he has to cut out those phases.

True. And that is usually a sign of a player getting near to the end of his career. Nonetheless, this tournament is a 3 set event, so I hope Federer wins again. That will be a solid basis for the beginning of next year to build on. He must be thinking about regaining no. 1 ranking and he first has to defend his title in London because 1500 ranking points is at stake. He's had some good runs recently, so it is possible for him to regain no.1 spot if he has an unbelievable run until July next year.

Djokovic lost to Tipsarevic and Berdych beat Ferrer, which means Djokovic is out of the tournament and Berdych won the group. It will be Federer v Ferrer, Berdych v Tsonga in the semis.

Federer wins 7-5, 6-3. He now overtakes Murray in the rankings and finishes 2011 as no.3.

The second semi of Tsonga v Berdych will be very, very close. I expect a three setter with nail-biting finish. Won't be watching it though since I will be in my bed watching my dreams instead. Very Happy

Federer wins ATP World Tour Finals! I hope he will win 1 or 2 slams next year + Olympic gold. 2 more weeks at no. 1 will make it perfect for him.
