... money rules ... (The one directly rolling into BE's pockets, of course)

Shame if they drop the young drivers test.

A suggestion is there might be some restrictions on which drivers can take part in the in-season tests so they may restrict it to young drivers (and Gary Paffett)

F1 - Marshal killed in Canadian GP incident

FIA statement following death of Canadian Grand Prix circuit worker.

10 June 2013 - 01h33, by GMM

The F1 world is mourning its first fatality in over a decade, after a track marshal was killed in the wake of Sunday’s Canadian grand prix.

Photographs depict the marshal, whose identity has not been revealed, holding the rear wheel of Esteban Gutierrez’s car steady as a recovery vehicle returned the Sauber to the pits.

"The worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up," read a statement issued by the governing FIA.

"As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle."

The marshal was airlifted to hospital but he died shortly afterwards.

"It’s terrible," race promoter Francois Dumontier is quoted by AP news agency.

"It tarnishes the superb weekend that we had. I am devastated to learn this. I don’t have any other words."

F1’s last fatality, in Melbourne in 2001, was also the death of a trackside marshal.

FIA statement in full

The FIA is sad to announce the death of a Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada circuit worker, at 6:02 pm.

The worker, a member of the Automobile Club de l’Île Notre Dame, was the victim of an unfortunate accident that occurred at the end of this afternoon’s Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. The worker was helping to recover a car which had stopped during the race. The recovery vehicle had lifted the car to return it to the pits and while doing this the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up. As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle.

The worker was transported via helicopter to Sacre-Coeur Hospital where he was treated by the traumatology department of Dr Ronald Denis, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Dr Jacques Bouchard, Chief Medical Officer of the Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The FIA, l’Automobile Club de l’Île Notre-Dame and the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada want to communicate their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. The identity of the worker cannot be revealed at this time.

Tragic indeed ... I was horrified to read the news . The Sauber went off below the area where I was sitting and I watched them remove the car with the crane and I actually snapped a few shots of them .... no idea that this accident took place . The Marshalls are tight bunch of good people called the ASRQ and work at all the various racing events here in Quebec ... it's a tragedy... thoughts to the family and friends of the deceased and all the members of the ASRQ for this loss , :-(

F1 - Hamilton says title chances ’wasted’ at McLaren
"Some people lost sight of what the objective is"

21 June 2013 - 08h52, by GMM

Six months after he left McLaren, it is clear the wounds between Lewis Hamilton and the great British team are far from being healed.

Over the winter, as the 2008 world champion left the Woking based squad that nurtured him from boyhood, strong rumours of a falling out between Hamilton and team ’supremo’ Ron Dennis swirled.

Those rumours were not silenced this week, when chairman Dennis - although no longer the team boss - hit out at an unnamed former McLaren driver for having lost focus.

"Some people lost sight of what the objective is," he said.

"When you lost sight of what you are doing, then you lost sight of what it takes to be a world champion," Dennis charged.

At the same time, 28-year-old Hamilton admitted he decided to leave McLaren because he felt he was "wasting away" his best chances of adding to his tally of a single world title.

"One (title) is less prestigious now because so many people have won a championship," he is quoted as saying by the Sun newspaper.

"Now the people who have two or three or four, (that is what) makes you special.

"I got to F1 and nearly won in my first year, then I won in my second year but I’ve never had a car to really compete since then.

"The car makes such a big difference so you’re just wasting away your best years," added Hamilton.

Saying he didn't have a car to win ... he was driving a better car than Alonso in 2010 ... compare results ....

Tragedy at Lemans ...    :-((((

Allan Simonsen suffered fatal injuries following a third-lap accident in Saturday’s 90th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 34-year-old Dane, at the wheel of the GTE-Am polesitting No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8, lost control at Tetre Rouge before making heavy contact with the barriers.
The driver was immediately attended to on the scene by doctors from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest medical service and was transported to the circuit medical center where he died of his injuries.
The accident resulted in a safety car period of more than 1 hour to repair the barriers.
Simonsen was due to share the car with fellow Danes Christoffer Nygaard and Kristian Poulsen, the current GTE-Am championship leaders in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Simonsen, a former Danish Formula Ford champion, was considered to be one of the most versatile GT drivers in the world, having competed in Europe, America and Australia, with numerous wins and championships to his credit.
It is the first driver death at Le Mans since 1997 when Sebastien Enjolras lost his life in pre-qualifying. The last driver fatality in the 24-hour race was Jo Gartner in 1986.
