USGP camera director.. WORST ever?

Post by 00521 on Sun Nov 02, 2014 11:19 pm

I mean Grosjean's car might have nice livery...

but following... him continually and then somehow miss the pass for the LEAD?

HAS to be among the WORST race camera directors ever.

Just my 2 cents.

Some of the cameramen seemed drunk, also. At times they drifted off to the parking area...showing parking cars instead of the action on track.

Not even close. I was thinking about this during the race. Coverage during the late 90's/early 2000's was far worse, with the race director following the leader, despite absolutely nothing going on at the front, whilst missing good midfield battles.

Funny...

At first, I thought the camera director had gone off to the men's room... and his junior had taken over.  Then I thought someone was drunk... or the cameramen had been partying the night before...

I finally settled on STUPID.

After all, as they say in Texas... "you can't fix stupid".

Yes, and I agree that races in the past where you only saw the lead car were absurd, but at least you knew who was leading... and why... and by how much... in pictures, not by numbers.

I mean, it's nice to see how the drivers at the FRONT are attempting top save their tires, or fight back, or possibly get tired in their driving style...

Just occasionally.  (LOL)

NBC Sports should;d send this crew back to covering NFL football.  That's a lot easier, apparently.

Today is the first time I have listened to a race by radio since the mid-60s, when that was THE way (along with magazines and papers).

I call it radio, because we never got to see anyone in the top five, except when the race director possibly "made a mistake" and forgot to follow the Renaults and McLarens.

Shocked

Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention, because I don't really think that it was SO bad.

The thing that is sooooo sad about all of this is FOM is (supposedly) attempting to attract US Viewers.

As the talking heads talk seriously about the race leaders and the US feed continually watched the guys in 10th- 13th place... for no apparent reason... it just made no sense at a certain point.

I was happy to see frequently positions 7-10, but everybody behind THEM???, for 75% of the race?

Not having a camera crew cover most pitstops was another strange one, then having the US camera feed screw up so badly that they even missed the pass for the lead and had to re-run... was just... well... beyond... bizarre.  If this was Go Karts... I might say... 'whatever'.

The one thing I'm sick of is seeing celebrities/girlfriends. Who cares?

+1

If I saw Matt Leblanc one more time I was going to lose my shit.

Unfortunately I was forced to watch the NBC feed for quali. Those commentators are shit. Thank god I was able to watch TSN (that carries the Brit feed) for the race.

The girlfriends of Sutil & Rosberg seem to be most popular with the cameras this year. It's almost Erja Hakkinen bad.

You guy's are forgetting that the cameramen are only used to filming cars going round in circles...anti-clockwise!

00521, I think the Brazilian director was far worse than the US one. Missed at least 3 very exciting moments from memory.

Although, I think it's the same director for every race, no?

Like the very exciting battle between the Mercs and he preferred to show Massa running
all on his own....

Jarnoo,

The race camera directors are usually from the local TV carrier, and in Brazil that would be GLOBO TV.

This has to do with the many different types of camera systems and uplink standards in use throughout around the world, as well as for the fact that in the TV coverage, you have an entire additional team that can run into 'big numbers' finically, liability and personnel wise... for an important national event like this.

Zag, I noticed the preference for Massa ALSO. There is usually some national preference in some of these coverage realities, much to our chagrin.

Just unfortunate that the coverage teams are often clueless, but Brazil's coverage was still far better than the USGP.

After all, Brazil has decades of covering F-1 in Sao Paolo, while the US camera team in Austin really seemed to think they were at a NASCAR race,

In Austin... the cameras had me perpetually waiting for the NASCAR "360 spin out camera", the 'big ole corn dog cam', the 'way too tight, itsy-bitty, teeny weeny, bra cam', and the "look-it-that-fan with a replica beer tank on his head" cam...... Rolling Eyes
