Location can supersede skill in F1.......for example a driver from New Zealand will have trouble getting the sponsors over many years to move up the ranks to F1. The only ones to get close have been Scott Dixon and Brendan Hartley. If it was skill only the whole way through the ranks I think we would see some changes to the grid (I say some as the top talent should still shine through).

Well thats how people (and the media) often think. I myself am guilty of this, I see young drivers from New Zealand and Aussie (two countries where I have lived) coming up through the ranks from young ages.....and you inevitably wish them well and follow their careers. I havent heard about most other young drivers till they are close to hitting F1.

Denny came from a different era, where getting to F1 was a different path than today I suspect.

There is actually a doco called "Trio at the Top" which is free online (to NZers at least) which shows the career paths of Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. Its in the NZ film archive website.

A much needed boost to his racing career that appears to be stalling.

Strange that in 33 F3 races the only wins have come in non championship one off races, while in Euro and British F3 events he has yet to win.

btw.....just how rubbish is the 2010 Euro F3 series, 13 cars Shocked

I get what your saying, but in my opinion talent is more important than nationality.

^^

of course.
You won't get an F1 drive based only on your nationality.

We'll see how he goes. Nico Hulkenberg also came into F1 with pretty good credentials but, alas, hasn't exactly come into his own and is mediocre at best currently, partly due to the Williams car but also due to inexperience.

My verdict's out on Bottas.

Nakajima was only at Williams because of his nationalty.

There are only 5 million Finns in world. This makes it harder for a Finn to get F1 drive than other nationalities from bigger countries, with LOT more people. This is simple business logistics, based on who gets how much sponsors etc.

And STILL there are Finns in F1. Just because they are so good!

Cool

Yes, it's really hard for young Finnish drivers to get enough money to drive international series. There have been so many "wasted talents" in the past few years, who would have deserved a chance... but that's how it is.

Look out for Aaro Vainio. He might be the next Finnish star along with Valtteri Bottas.

I am NOT saying that oher drivers would not have it hard to get sponsors too, but definitely if you are from e.g. Britain or German your possible sponsors are hugely more likely to help you.

It definitely is an advantage to be from a large rich country that has a lot of F1 fans, so much more marketing appeal and supply of money.

True, although if there are a lot of F1 fans, then there is probably a lot of drivers from that country.

I always supported drivers based on nationality (Fittipaldi, Piquet, Senna, Barrichello..)

But the current crop is so crappy (Massa, Bruno Senna) I don't give that much importance anymore.

Brazil always had a tradition of drivers in F1 but it seems the talents are not being able to reach the top these days.
