Just listened to Wolff's explanation why they pulled Lewis in for another pit stop. It's even more ridiculous than I thought. They were supposedly "afraid" of Vettel getting new tyres, so it was supposed to be a defensive move against Vettel (!!!).

You gotta be kidding me. How stupid does he think the fans are? This is freakin' Monaco we're talking about here.

Exactly.

To make Zing happy.... lets give Wolff the benefit of a doubt.

Lets say that the idiot wanted to give Dieter Zetsche a gift of a 1-2 photo op. with say 3 seconds between them.

That would mean pulling Hamilton in, and having Nico hold at speed, and somebody screwed up.

Nico smells blood and increases speed, so does Vettel on his tail.

Actually, not so crazy.

Ford tried it in 1966 and McLaren screwed Ken Miles out of the elusive triple crown of endurance racing.

QUOTE:

At the last pit stop, three Mark IIs were in front. Ken Miles and Denny Hulme were leading, followed by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon in the same lap. Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson were third, but twelve laps behind.

At the finish, Ford decided to stage publicity photo between Miles/Hulme and McLaren/Amon with the No. 5 following, too. According to witnesses, McLaren left a small margin to Miles and it was expected than Miles/Hulme will be declared winner after the examination of the photo finish. But the ACO declared the McLaren/Amon car had won the race, having covered more distance in 24 hours, as it had started the race several places behind the Miles/Hulme car. The ACO estimated the difference to 8 meters. This was a terrible disappointment for Ken Miles, who expected the triple crown Daytona-Sebring-Le Mans as a reward for his investment in the GT40 development. The finish remains the closest in Le Mans history.

I don't see why Mercedes would give up a 1-2 for this, or why they would feel the need to favour Nico in any way. There is even less credibility in this conspiracy theory than the theory Red Bull was hindering Webber's car to favour Vettel.

Mercedes thought they could get in and out before Nico and Vettel got passed. He probably would still have if the Sauber hadn't held up his stop for a second!

At the end of the day, they should have realised that:
- Lewis had caught the SC while Nico and Vettel had free track
- Ferrari weren't pitting anyway
- Track position is king at Monaco
- Nico and Vettel weren't pitting, they wouldn't have any advantage anyway

While Mercedes have a lot of egg on their faces, this still isn't as bad as say, Austria 2002 IMO.

It's a big surprise, it turned a rather dull race into something incredibly memorable and is certain to spice up the championship. I'm looking at the positives Very Happy

And no one mentioned Max's accident...
Max said that he was not overtaking, he was actually avoiding car which braked early. What do you think? I kinda believe him.

It was a poor call.

Estimates were that a Pit Stop for tyres was about 20 seconds lost track time, but as the BBC Pundits commented before the Safety Car incident, that estimate was out by some six to eight seconds and 28 seconds were needed.

Mercedes either missed the other stops and the extra time they were taking or thought they could buck the trend.

Of course that discounts the Conspiracy Theorists, and I'm sure the arguments will go on and on.

Whatever the reason, Mercedes have plenty of headline publicity and as the saying goes;

Any publicity is good publicity.

I do, though not sure how heartfelt it was....

While not believing in any kind of conspiracy, there is not a single person who knows F1, and in particular Monaco,
who believed it was the right thing to do for Lewis apart from the so called Mercedes experts/strategists...  incomprehensible!!

Not that it is Hamilton's fault, but this puts it in a serious weird twist......

"The team said to stay out," the gutted Hamilton revealed afterwards. "I said ’These tyres are going to drop in temperature’ so they said to pit.

"Without thinking I came in with full confidence that the others had done the same."

Incredible that his perfect weekend got shattered in less than a minute.

I was just happy that he walked away.

This isn't his first dive bomb move (I remember China specifically where somehow didn't lock a brake and completed a move) and I had predicted he'd take someone out eventually.

That said, it's definitely a combination of things. Max braking super late, because the braking zone is so small, was the only way he was going to get by. Grosjean on old tyres struggling for grip, has a right to brake early.

It gets better! Wolff's conclusion after all this was actually that they'll use even less (no) common sense going forward - instead of more which would have easily prevented this embarassment.

Thank god Niki Lauda is on that team. He'll set them straight (again) in that department (has already made it clear that he will). Wolff is really lucky he joined the team at the perfect time. Under normal circumstances, that guy wouldn't last a season at Mercedes.

They didn't show much of it on TV but it looked like the same move Alonso got penalized for. Actually it looked like Alonso was further ahead and left room for the car on the outside. The stewards have to show more consistency. Rolling Eyes

This is what Arrivabene had to day wrt. the Kimi incident:

As for Kimi, he has a problem with qualifying, because he’s always strong on race pace. When Ricciardo got past him, I was determined to have a hard look at the rules, but then I was told that now the move is allowed when the driver in front opens up the line and the one behind manages to put at least one wheel inside. So we respect the Stewards’ decision.

So all you have to do in Monaco now is to push the guy ahead of you out of the way, essentially. A bit like DTM was in the past. Could be some interesting pinball action coming up!
