Preseason Testing 2016

Post by F1 forever on Mon Feb 22, 2016 9:50 pm

Barcelona Day 1

Times:

1. Sebastian Vettel - Ferrari - 1:24.939 - 69 laps
2. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 1:25.409 - 156 laps
3. Daniel Ricciardo - Red Bull - 1:26.044 - 87 laps
4. Valtteri Bottas - Williams - 1:26.091 - 80 laps
5. Alfonso Celis - Force India - 1:26.298 - 58 laps
6. Jenson Button - McLaren - 1:26.735 - 84 laps
7. Carlos Sainz - Toro Rosso 1.27.180 - 55 laps
8. Marcs Ericsson - Sauber - 1:27.555 - 88 laps
9. Pascal Wehrlein - Manor - 1:28.292 - 54 laps
10. Romain Grosjean - Haas - 1:28.399 - 31 laps
11. Jolyon Palmer - Renault - 1:29.356 - 37 laps

As usual these times mean...well nobody really knows considering all the variables. Is Renault going to be this season's McLaren though?

I'm really interested in Manor's progress - the new Mercedes engine and some big name additions to the team could make this an interesting team going forward.

A McLaren completing 84 laps? How many engines did they use? mrgreen

2. Daniel Ricciardo - Red Bull - 1:23.525 - 112 laps
3. Sergio Perez - Force India - 1:23.650 - 101 laps
4. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - 1:24.867 - 172 laps
5. Marcus Ericsson - Sauber - 1:25.237 - 108 laps

10. Jolyon Palmer - Renault - 1:26.189 - 42 laps
11. Max Verstappen - Toro Rosso - 1:26.539 - 121 laps

Vettel giving the brand new "ultra-soft" tyre a spin today...more than 2 secs faster than yesterday.

Mercedes clearly not doing any speedy runs (just like last season's testing). Only medium tyres used.

The Renault / Red Bull comparison could be an interesting one this season. Obviously Renault is behind on their schedule.

Comments from the Merc drivers are becoming more and more ominous...I hope they're wrong and they aren't as much ahead of everyone else as they (and it seems many others) think.

Have you seen top speeds from this test? Honda was again dead last. I hope that this doesn't indicate another year of McLaren misery.

Barcelona Day 5

Times:

1. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - 1:23.022 - 82 laps (morning)
2. Valtteri Bottas - Williams - 1:23:229 - 123 laps
3. Fernando Alonso - McLaren - 1:24.735 - 92 laps
4. Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari - 1:24.836 - 71 laps
5. Daniil Kvyat - Red Bull - 1:25.049 - 69 laps
6. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 1:25.051 - 89 laps (afternoon)
7. Max Verstappen - Toro Rosso - 1:25.176 - 144 laps
8. Nico Hulkenberg - Force India - 1:25.336 - 121 laps
9. Felipe Nasr - Sauber - 1:25.493 - 103 laps
10. Kevin Magnussen - Renault - 1:25.760 - 119 laps
11. Esteban Gutierrez - Haas - 1:26.661 - 23 laps
12. Rio Haryanto - Manor - 1:226.625 - 45 laps

Nico ran only on soft tyres. So I guess it's clear they'd have easily set the fastest time in Barcelona testing so far with the ultra-softs.

Barcelona Day 7

Times:

1. Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari - 1:22.765 - 136 laps
2. Felipe Massa - Williams - 1:23.192 - 119 laps
3. Nico Hulkenberg - Force India - 1:23.251 - 137 laps
4. Max Verstappen - Toro Rosso - 1:23.382 - 159 laps
5. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - 1:24.126 - 81 laps (morning)
6. Felipe Nasr - Sauber - 1:24.760 - 116 laps
7. Fernando Alonso - McLaren - 1:24.870 - 118 laps
8. Pascal Wehrlein - Manor - 1:24.913 - 48 laps
9. Daniil Kvyat - Red Bull - 1:25.141 - 121 laps
10. Jolyon Palmer - Renault - 1:26.224 - 98 laps
11. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 1:26.488 - 63 laps (afternoon)
12. Romain Grosjean - Haas - 1:27.196 - 78 laps

Some rays of hope?

Raikkonen's time of 1:22.765 replaced team-mate Sebastian Vettel's best effort from the first week of testing and set a new benchmark to for the final day of the pre-season on Friday. The time was set on Pirelli's new ultra-soft compound, which reigning champions Mercedes have opted not to use this winter.

Although the ultra-soft time stole the headlines, of more interest was Raikkonen's lap on the yellow-striped soft compound tyre, which beat Nico Rosberg's best effort in the Mercedes using the same compound earlier this week by 0.013s. Testing times on different days rarely offer a fair comparison, but Ferrari's effort sends a message of intent just two weeks remaining before the first race weekend gets underway in Melbourne.

It's interesting that Mercedes is the only team splitting the running between the two drivers every day. As if they tried to make sure that no driver feels disadvantaged somehow.

Barcelona Day 8

Times:

1. Sebastian Vettel - Ferrari - 1:22.852 - 142 laps
2. Carlos Sainz - Toro Rosso - 1:23.134 - 133 laps
3. Felipe Massa - Williams - 1:23.644 - 129 laps
4. Sergio Perez - Force India - 1:23.721 - 60 laps
5. Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes - 1:24.133 - 69 laps (morning)
6. Daniel Ricciardo - Red Bull - 1:24.427 - 123 laps
7. Jenson Button - McLaren - 1:24.714 - 121 laps
8. Jolyon Palmer - Renault - 1:24.859 - 90 laps
9. Marcus Ericsson - Sauber - 1:25.031 - 132 laps
10. Romain Grosjean - Haas - 1:25.255 - 66 laps
11. Esteban Gutierrez - Haas - 1:26.899 - 25 laps
12. Rio Haryanto - Manor - 1:25.899 - 58 laps
13. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - 1:26.140 - 70 laps (afternoon)

Isn't it interesting that Ferrari's ~1:22.800 that both Kimi and Vettel put in over these two weeks is the same time that Mercedes put in one year ago (see above)? For some reason teams are showing even less this time around during testing, despite Pirelli adding the ultra-softs to the mix.

Re: Preseason Testing 2016

So what's Jordan's track record with these predictions?

Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan told Germany’s Auto Bild Motorsport that anyone who believes Ferrari will regularly beat Mercedes this year is "dreaming".

"Mercedes’ lead is immense," Jordan, now an outspoken broadcaster, said. "I think they could have a cup of coffee during every pitstop and still win.

"They are now dominating F1 in every field including politics. They are the new superpower," he added.

Jordan thinks Mercedes’ nearest challenger this year will be Sebastian Vettel, "but the question is not how close Ferrari will get to Mercedes.

"The question is how close can Mercedes let them get so that their dominance is not too obvious," he said.

Rosberg:

Some in the paddock have said that Mercedes' long run pace suggests another season of dominance is on the cards but Rosberg is yet to be convinced.

"They have been very quick for sure," Rosberg said of Ferrari. "All the teams have their strategists so we know more or less what fuel the other teams are running and they know our fuel.

"So we know more or less where we are compared to Ferrari - which is why I say for sure it is close. But we are not sure if we are ahead or behind."

When asked what he would say to those saying Mercedes is in a different league, he replied: "I just say let's wait two weeks ... I hope they are right."

From what I can tell with my limited information, I'd say at these tests, Mercedes was comfortably ahead of Ferrari. But Ferrari's package in Melbourne will reportedly be quite a step up from what they've had in Barcelona (engine upgrade etc.), and who knows what Mercedes still has in the offing, so I guess this testing season was about as inconclusive as it can get.

Since Nico said it ("they all have their strategists"), here is the ranking Williams came up with:

1. Mercedes
2. Ferrari (~ 4 tenths per lap behind Mercedes)
3. Williams/Red Bull (~ 6 tenths behind Mercedes)
4. Force India/Toro Rosso

On average, Ferrari qualified about 7 tenths behind Mercedes on Saturdays last season. So it would still be a big gap, but Ferrari should win more races this year.

Re: Preseason Testing 2016

Post by F1 forever on Fri Mar 11, 2016 6:45 pm

Ah, Lewis brightens my day:

"Honestly, I think we are going to have a real battle and Ferrari has really picked up its game. That's my opinion. It's still difficult to know, the car is good, but Ferrari was strong towards the end of last year and I think they have made a significant improvement from last year to this year.

"They did some incredible times at the last test in some of their long runs and I believe they didn't bring an upgrade to any of the test days, so I imagine they will bring a good package to the first race. I think you are going to see a good fight, which is what I want and we want in the sport. I'm excited about that."

It's funny how Lewis has been stressing for a long time now that he wants Ferrari to catch up, he wants a real fight - while Rosberg has said as recently as a few days ago that he "hopes" that Mercedes will be in a league of its own. Why am I not surprised?
