I can't really watch FP, but I'm really excited about qualifying. Let's see what happens!

What was up with Ferrari in FP1? No time from Vettel, Kimi being nowhere?

Yea the weather was pretty much on and off all session. Couldn't gauge any performance at all. Still had a grin on my face the whole time. Hopefully fp2 will be dry

I'd rather have rain during the race than FP and qualy, but I guess it's the other way around.

New cars, more tyre choices, new qualifying, new radio restrictions...this should get interesting on many levels.

Lauda said before this weekend that he sees Mercedes still leading Ferrari, but only by about 3 or 2 tenths (for Barcelona). If accurate, that wouldn't be an insurmountable lead...

Just watched the Formula E race from last weekend as kind of a warmup, and it's actually pretty entertaining during the 2nd stint!

Tough to see Ferrari trying to compete with one competitive driver vs. Mercedes two.

They officially ruined qualifying. Drivers basically quit before each session was over. Was over 2 minutes left in q3 and nobody was on track. Wow it's bad. Ruin what's not broken but don't fix what is. Scrap this please

Toto Wolff is right.
This new qualifying format is rubbish.
FIA keeps tinkering with the rules just for the sake of it. If it ain't broken, leave it alone.

Yes, but why? To save tyres? Then why don't they get another set so they only have to worry about setting the fastest lap they possibly can?

Others seemed to not have understood that you have to have your lap completed by the time the countdown ends.

So I guess the gap between Mercedes and Ferrari is still about 5 tenths on this track in qualy. Hard to say since Vettel didn't put in another lap.

I would personally keep the elimination style qualifying for rounds 1 and 2, and round 3 with 10 drivers with an extra set of tyres like last season (something that was actually on the table a few months ago).

But of course they'll just go back to the old format.

Does anyone know whether Ferrari brought the upgrades to Melbourne they were expected to debut there (new engine spec etc.)? Seems like no?

For me personally I like the old format better. As was the case today, many of the drivers were doing their best lap on the the time that they were eliminated. The lap doesnt count regardless unless you are the on the bubble at 1:30 of each session. Saubers Ericsons lap counted even though the time was up but everybody elses didnt count. Thats confusing as hell.

The most excitng part of qualy is the end of each session. Which this new format effectively killed, but thank god this will be scrapped. If I was a paying customer in Australia I would be livid. Demanding my money back, atleast some form of compensation

I think the new format started off really well...everyone getting out there, even some overtaking to get yourself into position...but then some teams apparently misunderstanding the countdown rules (they must have, because their actions made no sense the way they did it), the "tyre saving", some technical difficulties and too few cars in Q3 ruined it.

I think with some minor adjustments, it could be quite a bit better than the "old" one. Oh well, doesn't matter, since the old format is going to return.

They should at least follow Lewis recommendation and give them as many tyres as they want for Q3 (without compromising what they have available for the race) so everyone tries until the last minute to get pole...at least 2 or 3 attempts. That's what fans want to see. Not this "strategic tyre saving" nonsense which no one wants to see.

Looking at last season's qualy results, Ferrari was actually 1.4 secs behind the Mercs on this track. And now it's closer to 5 tenths? That's pretty promising, all things considered.

Unlimited tyres would not have fixed anything. If they would have run an outlap and an inlap at qualy speed then they would have spent 1:25 + 1:25 + 1:25 = 4:15. Then they would need a few seconds to change tyres and another outlap + timed lap, so lets add 0:05 + 1:25 + 1:25 = 2:55.

So the time to set a lap and then defend it would take 7 minutes and 10 seconds of the session. This is of course also only correct if you are the first car out exactly when the lights turn green.

Effectively, the slowest 3-4 cars in Q3 will be eliminated directly after their first run (which was also the case) since they would not have time to run again (unless they can go faster with the same tyres).

What an idiot who came up with this idea of a qualy format...

Your points are well taken, but you may have overlooked my personal preference described above (which is to run Q3 according to the old rules, 10 cars, but with unlimited tyres). Apparently it's actually something that is being discussed again in F1 circles (to combine that with the elimination-style format in Q1 and Q2), which I didn't know when I suggested it.

So my (or rather Lewis') suggestion about unlimited tyres referred to running Q3 according to the old format.

Q3 with the new rules was bad, but it was made even worse by the fact that Vettel couldn't even try to challenge the Mercs because he had only 1 set of tyres left for Q3, which limited him to one attempt.

Don't forget they also need to refuel and they have to do it inside the garage, so those 0.5 tenths would translate into minutes. This new format would fail in Spa. You surely would get more action in a rain delay race
