FORMULA 1 - BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX 2016

Post by F1 forever on Tue Mar 29, 2016 10:04 pm

Really looking forward to this! Here's hoping Ferrari will put up a strong showing!

Interestingly enough, Red Bull thinks with the first proper engine upgrade from Renault, they could be right there with Ferrari (expected at about the 7th race of the season). Not holding my breath, I don't think that's realistic, but if it is, we could be in for a great season!

edit: HAHA, they thought that last season already: http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ricciardo-renault-upgrades-can-allow-red-bull-to-match-ferrari/

Fernando missing the race due to injury.

GP2 champion Stoffel Vandoorne will drive his car in Bahrain.

Happy to see Vandoorne in the car. I have a feeling he will do very well.

He has never driven the car before. That must be quite a challenge!

For some reason Nico's time in FP1 is almost 3 tenths faster than the 2015 pole position... Shocked

It's also 1.8 secs ahead of the non-Mercedes competition...

Have they changed the track?

Breathing a sigh of relief here... Vettel also capable of doing 1:32:XX. Looked for quite a while as if the Mercs were consistently 2 secs ahead of the rest...

Very ominous pace there from the Mercs. Last season, they had a gap of half a second over the closest Ferrari on Friday. This has roughly tripled to about 1.5 secs today.

Crap.

Ferrari didn't have a clean lap on the supersofts, but that hardly accounts for 1.5 secs. Also, nobody else is anywhere close to the Mercs.

I don't think I've seen anything like that in FP2 all of last season, and we know how dominant they were then.

Valtteri Bottas fears Mercedes' impressive gap to the rest in Bahrain's Friday practice sessions is a fairer reflection of its advantage over the rest.

Mercedes finished comfortably clear of the rest of the pack in FP2 after the threat from Ferrari failed to materialise. Williams driver Bottas finished eighth in FP2, 1.7s down on Mercedes, and he thinks some sort of normality may have been restored to the pecking order.

"I would say the gap was surprisingly small in Melbourne and now it's maybe how it should be," Bottas said. "Maybe Ferrari still has something up its sleeve and I'm sure we can still improve a lot from today."

So 1.7 secs is normality now?

So Wolff says their analysis shows that the Mercs are 6 tenths per lap quicker than Ferrari in qualy, and that it should be closer in the race.

Man I had really hoped they could challenge for pole at this circuit.

Re: FORMULA 1 - BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX 2016

Looks like Ferrari has issues with their turbos that they hope to sort out once F1 gets to Europe. Apparently that's costing them half a second per lap, so they should get more competitive whenever they manage to sort them out, which is a highly complicated matter.

That explains a lot. At least there is still hope that Ferrari can eventually close the gap to the Mercs this season.

It's a shame for the next races, but at least Kimi's longruns looked good today.

I guess we have to hope for the Mercs to screw up their starts and for the Ferraris to last the distance to make it interesting...

All this is just bad news for the new qualifying format, specially Q3. Rest of the grid is just no competitive enough to go out for a second lap, they would prefer to save a set of tyres.

Yeah but the Q3 elimination format is already history anyway. It has no proponents, no one is expecting it to work. The only reason it gets another run is because of the oddities of F1 governing rules. It's the last time you'll ever see it, so savor the moment Wink . The respective meeting is on Sunday.

No action at the end of each qualy makes it terrible. It was the best part of qualy. Checkered flag being out who has the speed to move out of the knockout zone. That excitement is now gone

It is a "one flying lap qualifying", no matter if you made a mistake, there is no point or reason to do another lap. Here in particular the degradation is so bad that they would prefer to save tyres than improve 2 or 3 positions on the grid.

There, 7 minutes to go on Q2 and is over, and nobody seems to be confused. IMO, the old format wont help either, the tyres rules messed up so much that they prefer to do only one lap

Exactly they just give up because their is no point. The whole point of this change was to keep cars on track. It's done the exact opposite

It does point to the real problem with qualifying: Drivers sacrifice laps and potentially better grid position to save tyres.

Saving tyres above everything else.

There's a very easy fix for this: Dedicated qualifying tyres, at least 2 or 3 sets per driver per qualifying round. Problem solved. Logistics even easier than they are now.

There should be no place for tyre saving in qualifying.

Good thing that in Bahrain, it doesn't make sense to save supersofts for the race. So we'll see more attempts.
