Well done Hammy!

Wolff's analysis/prediction of the gap between the Mercs and Ferraris for qualifying was spot-on!

So the race could be closer.

Blazing lap from Lewis there!

With the Grosjean interview, said exactly what you guys been saying. P9 is the perfect position because you can choose what tire to be on and you save a set of tires

So it's interesting: If Ferrari can solve their turbo problems, and they do indeed account for roughly half a second per lap, the Ferrari and Mercedes could be neck-and-neck. That would be awesome!

Lets hope things are so, and that Merc doesn't get too big advantage before Spain!

No matter what qualifying format will be used going forward (obviously the one seen the last 2 races isn't even an option to vote for anymore since Melbourne), I think dedicated qualifying tyres would solve most of the issues we've seen.

And it would do away with the nonsensical tyre strategies during qualy, also ("let's use the medium tyre to make it through Q1!").

Yet that doesn't even seem to be a topic of discussion. Huh?

Err... Lewis' pole lap was the fastest lap ever on the Bahrain circuit in its 10 years of existence... and more than 3 seconds faster than last season's pole, also set by Hammy! Shocked

I believe this format would be great with tyres that last. If they could fill the tanks, stay out and circulate and continue setting fast laps, there wouldn't be any dead space during the session. Even with more sets of the current tyres, you'll see the drivers getting knocked out in chunks of three or four because they can't get back, change tyres and fill up and start a flying lap in those 3 or so minutes.

Yeah but we're looking for a realistic solution. Those tyres don't exist and are the opposite of what F1 has asked Pirelli to produce.

I think the real problem today was drivers like Verstappen saying they didn't go for another lap (even though they had lots of time and potential to improve) because saving tyres means more than an improved position on the grid. That is the exact opposite of what qualifying should be about!

It could help, but realistically I don't feel there's any saving this format lol. Swallow your pride and change it back.

But then the old format has the same problem (tyre saving). And they changed it because promoters wanted more action on track (which I agree with, I thought the old format's Q1 and Q2 were a borefest that I skipped entirely last season).

Hey Jarnooo, Vandoorne actually outqualified Button in his very first F1 qualifying! And it seems he could have gone even faster.

Same for Wehrlein, great performance in a Manor in his second qualifying!

He's done very well considering it's his first outing. Surely Button will get the better of him in the race, but if not, it could well seal his fate for 2017.

There's talk about Alonso maybe missing the next race as well. So he could get another chance.

It seems that Lewis is under investigation, reversing in the pitlane. Would he be sanctioned?

Reprimanded. But even that is kinda silly, given the circumstances.

It's probably way too early to say that but... does Kimi look more competitive this season? He still has those problems getting the tyres warmed up, but he seems closer to Vettel...

Re: FORMULA 1 - BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX 2016

Post by F1 forever on Sun Apr 03, 2016 3:56 pm

So it seems that Ferrari has a new mode that they used for the first time that does actually allow them to tap into the full power of the engine... for a single lap. So the 5 tenths difference in qualifying is the "real" difference. Apparently they gained close to half a second (as "expected") using this mode, but it's not available in the race (that should come once F1 gets to Europe, 7th or 8th race of the season).

Vettel was surprised that the Mercs could pull another half a second out of the hat for their last attempt - at least the Merc guys feigned suprised about that too, blaming it on temperatures? I don't know if they're lying...

Wow what a race. Hammy screwed himself again. Passing was nice in this race. Very impressive from Vandoorne and Pascal future champions for sure. Maybe this is Rosbergs year

Great race. Glad the craziness lasted more than one lap! This new 3 types of tyre rule is great and a rare one that management got right.
