Rosberg Retires With Immediate Effect!

Post by RaySinKa on Fri Dec 02, 2016 3:50 pm

Once I got over the instant shock I thought, 'What a good move!'

"...World champion Nico Rosberg has announced he has retired from Formula 1 with immediate effect.

The 31-year-old German won his first world title on Sunday, beating Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by finishing second in the final race in Abu Dhabi.

"I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right," Rosberg said in a Facebook post.

Rosberg won nine of this season's 21 grands prix, beating three-time champion Hamilton by five points.

"For 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my 'one thing' to become Formula 1 world champion," he added.

"Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I've made it."

The son of Finland's 1982 world champion Keke, Rosberg made his F1 debut for Williams at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2006, finishing seventh.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the news took him "completely by surprise."

"We now have to consider options and we will start to look at it on Monday" he added..."

Get ready for a bun fight for the seat!

Vettel?
Ricciardo?
Versteppan?
Alonso?

Me neither but on reflection it is a wise and clever move.

As Nico says, he's achieved all that he ever wanted in motor racing and he's walked away while on top and with a lovely family waiting there for him.

Not that it's likely that he needs money but I bet there's a media job waiting for him back at home.

Very surprising and also disappointing....

I was really looking forward to the fight between him and Lewis next year...

Again, very surprised...

Zag, I suspect that next year was building to be a mess.

I feel that Nico's move makes it much easier for Mercedes to deal with the outstanding discipline issues that they have with Lewis but does them open to 'superstar' ransom as his ego will believe that without him there is no team!

For that reason I would like to see Vettel or Verstappen move across so that there will at least be some inter team competition if Mercedes continue to dominate.

I really don't see any discipline issues with Lewis....  They pay him to win races and that is
what he does!!    How on earth can you come on the radio and tell him to speed up, he was
racing to win and that is exactly what he did.  Mercedes should concentrate on giving him a
car that works day in and day out and leave him to do his part of the deal!!

If anything Rosbergs retirement makes this year seem even more like many have thought a 'gift' from Mercedes.
Changing mechanics, lots of unreliability for Lewis, Wolfe and Lauda's faces when 'their' guy wasn't doing so well.

I am very disappointed he hasn't given Lewis the 'right to reply'... hell it was only a few months ago he negotiated a
new two year deal!! You wouldn't see Murray give up when he won Wimbledon, Hatton when he became world champion,
and a million other sportsmen. Just not up for the fight, not the words of a true champion.

I don't believe Lewis has that big an ego, sure he knows he is the best because he is the best (ask the other team managers...),
but wouldn't in any way hold Mercedes to ransom and certainly wouldn't do what the likes of Vettel and Alonso would do on
deciding who the other driver in the team would be!

Very disappointing!!

I'm in total shock.

I can't even remember anyone ever quitting as F-1 WDC immediately after winning his first title. Beyond personal attributes, what about feeling a responsibility to the team? Perhaps his wife and new child played heavily in this?

We are certainly experiencing a new type of thinking in the digital age, that's for sure.

His sponsor Mercedes must be stunned, as that's an entire year of major free advertising at P/R events... right down the drain.

Im also a little disappointed with Nico for not defending the title but I understand it. He acheived his dream and got enought money to live comfy for the rest of his life. What more can you ask for. He wants a big family and he and his wife gets to be there every step of the way. I always dream of doing just that if I ever hit the lotto.

As he said the last 3 years have been the toughest of his life and he overcame it. enjoy yourself Nico I was always a fan since your gp2 days. Now for that second Mercedes seat, imo its only 2 choices Alonso or Verstappen. Do not put Pascal in.

Here are the scenarios I would like to have

Mercedes takes Alonso, Mclaren takes Pascal

Mercedes takes Verstappen, Redbull takes Sainz, Toro Rosso takes the new GP2 champ Gasly

With these scenarios it prevents a boring season. In case Mercedes has a dominate car again atleast those 2 guys would give Hammy a really hard time

Rosberg probably knows he wont be so lucky next year. Nine wins vs 10 for Lewis + the one that got away in Malaysia & one DNF vs two DNF's for Lewis says it all. He was very lucky that Lewis was unlucky!

Very surprised when I heard this, but also a great move from Rosberg. Out on a high and a satisfying way to leave F1 after beating Lewis. As for a replacement, I thought why not Buemi who has been great the last few years?

I don't think anyone saw Nico retirement announcement coming. I don't think it matters who replaces Nico....Lewis will thrash all comers.

I see it like this: when Nico finally won Lewis in F1, he decided to show his behind at Lewis and not give him a chance to come back at him. Thus making sure he is the one who left as champion. Leaving the loser in dust...

Very Happy

Bottas seems to be well in the frame for Mercedes!

Williams are prepared to release Valtteri Bottas to become Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate in 2017.

Also, Massa to make Williams return?

If Seb is the long term Merc driver after 2018, why should Bottas sign a 1 year deal....unless Lewis plans to leave as well.
