Our Favourite Foods .... Mmmm

Post by Schuy1 on Wed Feb 24, 2010 5:07 pm

Even though I am Australian born, I do like many traditional dishes from Hungary & Bavaria, Germany from where dad & mum are from.

Over the past year or so I have tried and now have a passion for LAKSA which I think originated from Malaysia .......

Imagine a large, steaming bowl of rice noodles with prawns and chicken and bean curd, immersed in a reddish, lemon grass-perfumed coconut curry sauce, as fiery and flavourful as a human hand can produce, topped with a mélange of raw, crunchy vegetables and herbs - bean sprouts, cucumber bits, sliced red chillies, cashews, spring onions and Vietnamese mint. Lovely stuff !! I love you Very Happy

Just wondering what other members' favourite dishes are?

Furthermore, there are some traditional Austrian dishes, I like as well as stuff from Scandinavia, cuz I own a cookery book, and Romania, cuz my grandma knows a lot of recipes from there....

I'm eating junk food just very seldom..but if I do, I love to go to McDonald's...I love the stuff, with is available at McCafe quite a lot....so lush.... Razz

Hi LadyR - I had "Salzburger knockel" for desert when we stayed in Salzburg for about a week ...... a kind of souffle - it was nice.

Actually - ALL the food (and beer!) was nice in Österreich I remember! Smile

Romanian foods .... wonder if they share many recepies with Hungary eg. Chicken paprikas, Goulash, Pörkölt etc.,.... Question

Glad many of you like Laksa too .... Mmmm

Real Italian Pizza usually only has one or two toppings on them ..... lots of Aussies order them "with the lot" ..... I don't!

Laksa is hot noodle that you (usually) have rice noodle in hot and spicy soup made of chilli and coconut milk(along with other ingredients). You can choose from chicken/beef/seafood/combination of each laksa. Here's a picture.

I like to have home made food, too, because it's just way more healthy than any food you can buy from restaurant. Restaurants use MSG and you never know if the ingredients used are always of good quality and fresh. Hygiene is always a concern, too, with restaurant food. Also, they tend to overprice their food. Imagine how many pizzas or how much pasta you can make with the cost of buying one dish. You will feel ripped off.

Even all those things considered, however, sometimes it's just impossible to resist the temptation of going out for a cuisine. I love Japanese food. I also like Chinese and other Asian food as well as Italian. It looks like we tend to have similar taste about the food! Very Happy

Read Schuy1 first post. mrgreen
There are 2 types of Laksa as far as I know - Lemak Laksa & Penang Laksa.
I like both. They taste very different. Do get both types in Oz Schuy1?
Penang Laksa has strips of fish, prawn paste & mint leaves, not spicy.
Lemak Laksa is more spicy with prawns, fish cakes, tau pok, cockles, chillies & coconut milk.

Oh just saw your pic Purist. That's lemak laksa. Very Happy

I had Japanese food for dinner last night.
Salmon sashimi, yakitori, tempura udon,......yummy.

Purist - Mate, that Laksa picture has made me hungry! - a beauty mate Very Happy

Lynn - I'm sure there are both types here in Oz but I've only ever had the spicier one (the one you call Lemak laksa) - I asked the restaurant lady for a Hot one last time ...... she then said "How hot? .. Hot Hot Hot .. or just Hot?"

I chickened out and said "just one Hot thanks!"

I used to just have it "Mild or Medium" before ...but the "Hot" was nice - I might be even more adventurous and ask for "Hot, Hot" next time Laughing

You know - I spent 5 days in Penang a few years ago BEFORE I knew about laksa ..... AND I did NOT even try the local stuff ..... I'll have to go back one day - for sure!!

My son likes Sushi .... BUT it MUST be freshly made, once it's been in the fridge, I reckon it tasts like cardboard!

I eat sushi on the spot, out of the chef hands. Laughing
I like to sit infront & see how the chefs prepare them.
These days the sushi chefs are not even Japanese anymore. mrgreen
Fresh sushi taste so good.

I haven't been to Penang for awhile too, last time was I think 2-3 years ago.
The local food there is good & CHEAP! Very Happy

OK, I will try to be short.

Apetisers / first course:
The best one is without a doubt the Jabugo ham (Jamón de Jabugo)

with extra virgin olive oil (a little bit). These pigs are an endemic race that only grows here. They are black (the normal pigs are kind of pink) and its meat is very different from the others.
Foie gras, lomo (another cold meat made from the same pig as the ham), Sushi are great too.

Main course:
My favourite one is cochinillo

Or grilled T-bome, beef fillet (grilled), black marlin (only tasted it in Mauritius, I usually hate fish but it is wonderfull on the southern hemisphere).

A turkish made shish kebab. I tried them in Germany, Belgium, France and Spain and only the turkish one can be consideredd real food mrgreen And in fact is is delicious.

I like chinese food, thai food, vietnamese food, indian food, south african food, mauritian food, spanish, french, italian (pizza, pasta, some meat receipts), turkish, arab (couscous and their pastries are overwhelming).

I do not like too much german and belgian food. It is too heavy, you cannot walk after eating that, and it's not too tasty imo.

Fast food:
Yes it's ok. Domino's or Pizza hut, Mcdonalds from time to time.

When I was in Melbourne, my boss who was Spanish, wanted to try Indian food. So i took him to an indian restaurant. The food there was made to suit western tastes and had very little spices. I felt like it was not even mildly spicy, but my boss had smoke coming from his ears Very Happy . I told him he should come to india and taste the real hot and spicy food here mrgreen .

Anything with chillies...

...but that can be beaten by anything with lots of chillies...

...and that can be beaten by just eating raw chillies Very Happy

Thai food is great but as I've found out "commercial" recipies for Thai food are nice but "village" Thai food as prepared by my flatmate is beautiful!!!!!

Samples are raw crab, left out overnight marinading in chillies, garlic, various other spices. Served raw with raw French beans and cold sticky rice Very Happy

Yeah I know, we were invited to a lunch in Durban, where a big Indian community lives.
I was the only one out of the spanish guests who finished the main course. It was spicy but tasty, I enjoyed it.

I got mexican family and their food is like eating fire so I have been kind of trained mrgreen
although I cannot eat it too often, I need to give a break to my stomach.
